Health and fitness
For
most people, the youthful years of life are carefree and easy. Health
and fitness
is not something that weighs on the minds of most youths, simply because
it is something that usually comes naturally.
But something tends to happen somewhere in those few years between
youth and adulthood where it suddenly becomes much harder to be fit
and healthy.
Increased hours at work, extra stress, family responsibilities and other
goals are all things that can take away from being healthy.
But, this doesn’t have to be the case. Many adults are able to
overcome the challenges to their health and fitness
by simply paying close attention to their health
and making being fit for life a priority for themselves.
By following some (or all) of the following nine suggestions, anyone
who feels like their health could and should be better will be able
to improve their health and thus feel better about themselves.
1. Move
– It may seem simple (and it is), but simply moving more is a
great way to increase health. Thanks to advancements in technology,
everything is easier. While things like elevators, cars and remote controls
are convenient, they can hamper our physical
health. So, get up from the couch to turn the television channel,
walk to the store or take the stairs. Doing any of these things just
one time will not make a major difference in the level of fitness of
an individual, but a constant doing of these things will lead to an
improvement in overall health.
2. Eat less fat – Each person should wake up in the morning
and then think throughout the day about all the ways he may best be
able to cut fat away from his daily diet. Doing things like not eating
hamburgers, French fries and donuts are obvious. But, other effective
methods that can cut a good deal of fat from a person’s daily
intake is to simply seek out low-fat dairy products and other food items.
This is one way that technology
has helped people be more fit because there are now more low-fat options
than ever before.
3. Give up smoking and drinking – Cigarettes and excessive alcohol
are major risks to overall
health and fitness. While the dangers of smoking are well-advertised,
drinking can also be hazardous to the health of those who drink. Because
beer is loaded with calories, it can quickly nullify any workout that
you may have performed during the day. Likewise, drinking until inebriated
can be dangerous to yourself as well as others.
4. Reduce stress – First of all, don’t get stressed out
if you can’t think of a way to reduce stress. That would be counter-productive.
Even though most people are busy, a great way to reduce stress is to
take 30 minutes of personal time each day to read a book, take a nap,
watch a funny television show, get a massage, practice yoga
excersizes, or do anything else that is relaxing. While some may
feel like they can’t afford to take 30 minutes a day to do this,
the fact is that for their sakes, they really can’t afford not
to do so.
5. Stay away from pollutants – Unfortunately, the world we now
live in does not allow for anyone to completely escape pollutants, but
there are things that can be done to be able to slightly better stay
away from pollution. One thing that can be done is a simple check of
the smog report. If there is a lot of smog, consider exercising
indoors. On the days when there is less pollution in the air, work
out outdoors. Also, doing things like planting shrubs in a yard can
help make the air in the immediate area a bit cleaner.
6. Follow traffic laws – First and foremost, wear a seatbelt.
But, aside from this, it would also be a good idea to follow the safety
laws on the road. Doing this seems simple enough, but being safer will
help to reduce stress levels in a person’s life.
7. Floss – That’s right, floss. Studies have shown that
people who floss actually tend to live longer lives. The reason for
this may simply be because those who floss are often more health conscious.
Whatever the reason is, flossing never is a bad idea.
8. Be positive – Although some people think the words “Be
positive” doses nothing more than refer to a blood type, the truth
of the matter is that those who are positive about their place in life
are generally much happier. And, a happy heart is a healthy
heart.
9. Learn from parents – Genetics plays a large role in the health
of a person. Those who have had parents who had problems with things
like diabetes, heart disease or alcoholism, should know that they should
take proper steps in their lives to minimize their risks to similar
ailments.
Following these nine steps will not guarantee that no kind of physical
ailment will come upon a person, but the likelihood of a debilitating
illness occurring is definitely much less likely. For the best
health and fitness, start slow. Take each of these steps individually,
then add them together.
